Definition

Holding up outside the conditions it was fitted to — new distributions, new domains, tasks the method was never tuned on. It is the property most machine learning claims ultimately rest on, and the hardest to evidence: a strong number on a single benchmark says little on its own, so such claims are judged by how far the evaluation moves away from the training setup.
