Definition

Refers to the normal distribution or to anything built on it. It is the default assumption for noise and for latent priors, largely because sums and linear maps of Gaussians stay Gaussian, which keeps the maths closed-form. In recent graphics work the word also names the primitive itself: 3D Gaussian splatting represents a scene as a cloud of anisotropic blobs rather than as a mesh.
