gauges

Definition
Local choices of coordinate frame at each point of a curved space. Because a manifold generally admits no single global frame, you must pick one per point, and gauge equivariance is the requirement that predictions not depend on that arbitrary choice — the manifold analogue of not caring which way you hold the ruler. The term is borrowed from gauge theory in physics; the everyday "gauge" meaning a measuring instrument is unrelated.
