Besides the ordinary sense of a research area, this word carries the physics sense: a function assigning a value to every point in space. Neural fields and radiance fields represent a scene as a network that maps coordinates to color and density, replacing explicit meshes or point clouds with a continuous learned function — the idea behind NeRF and its descendants.
