Definition

A piece of information extracted from raw data — historically a hand-designed measurement, and in deep learning the activations a layer produces. The shift from engineered features to learned ones is most of what changed in the field, which is why feature learning and representation learning are near-synonyms. In tabular settings the word is used interchangeably with a column or predictor variable.
