Definition

A survey-style verb in titles, signalling that the paper maps out a design space or probes the behavior of existing methods rather than proposing a new one. What such work contributes is measurement and comparison under controlled conditions. Do not confuse it with exploration in reinforcement learning, which is the technical problem of trying unfamiliar actions instead of exploiting what is already known to work.
