To give reasons for an output. The central difficulty is that a model's stated explanation need not correspond to the computation that produced the answer — plausibility and faithfulness are separate properties, and fluent post-hoc rationalization is the default failure mode. This is why explanations are evaluated by intervention: change the factor the explanation cites and see whether the output actually changes as the explanation implies.
