Definition
In information extraction, an event is a structured record of something that happened: a trigger word plus arguments filling roles — who, what, when, where. Event extraction goes a step beyond topic classification because it must bind participants to roles, not just label a document. The same notion appears in video understanding, where an event is a temporally bounded action rather than a static object in a frame.
