Definition

The process of building something up, with a range that depends on context: the full software lifecycle from writing code to maintaining it; the construction of a method or theory in research prose; and, in dataset splits, the development set held out for tuning between the training data and the untouched test set. The third sense is the one most easily missed, and it is usually signalled by the word set.
