Definition

Systems that locate instances of a target rather than labelling an input as a whole. In vision, an object detector outputs both what and where — class plus bounding box — a harder problem than classification because the number of objects is not known in advance. The word now also covers detectors for machine-generated text, a use where reliability, and the cost of a false accusation, is actively contested.
