Fixing what a term or a measured quantity actually refers to. In benchmark and evaluation work this is often the substantive contribution rather than a preliminary: numbers reported against a vague target cannot be compared across papers. Distinguish a mathematical definition, which pins something down by formula, from an operational one, which pins it down by measurement procedure — evaluation lives on the latter.
