Definition
Crisis here means a disaster, accident, or outbreak — a window in which information volume spikes and decisions cannot wait. Crisis informatics studies how to pull actionable signal such as damage reports, needs, and locations out of social media during that window. It is harder than ordinary text classification because rumor and genuine reporting surge together, ground-truth labels arrive late if at all, and a confident wrong answer misdirects responders.
