Definition

James Cooley, who with John Tukey published the divide-and-conquer algorithm for the fast Fourier transform. Cooley–Tukey recursively factors a discrete Fourier transform into smaller ones, cutting the cost far below the naive approach and making frequency-domain methods practical across signal processing and numerical computing. The name essentially never appears alone; it is one half of the algorithm's hyphenated label.
