Definition

Pooling the behaviour of many users to make a prediction for one — the idea behind collaborative filtering, which recommends what similar users liked without analysing item content at all. Its strength is that it needs no understanding of the items, only a matrix of interactions; its weakness is the cold start, since a new user or new item has no co-occurrence history. The contrasting family is content-based filtering.
