cohort

Definition

A cohort is a group defined by a shared characteristic — same diagnosis, same treatment, same enrollment window — and followed over time. The term comes from epidemiology, where cohort studies are observational: you watch what happens rather than assign the exposure. In ML papers it turns up with clinical records and user logs, and it matters because a cohort is selected by criteria, not sampled at random, so confounding is the default assumption.
