Definition
Chess was the long-standing showcase problem for search-based AI, where progress came from hand-engineered evaluation functions paired with deep alpha-beta search. It reappears in modern papers as one of the boards — alongside Go and shogi — that a single self-play algorithm learned to play at top level from the rules alone. Its role now is largely as a reference point for hand-crafted versus learned knowledge.
