Definition

A single written symbol. In NLP it names a granularity: character-level models split text into individual symbols rather than words or subwords, which is robust to typos, rare words, and scripts without spaces, but makes sequences much longer. It is also the C in OCR. The everyday senses — personality, or a figure in a story — do not apply.
