Working out a specific numerical result. The distinction that matters in practice is whether the model performs it internally, token by token, or delegates it to a calculator or code interpreter — the dividing line in tool-use research, and usually the more reliable design. Compare computation, which refers broadly to compute cost and complexity; calculation is the concrete, arithmetic-level sense.
