black

Definition
Literally a color, but in technical writing a metaphor for opacity: black box, black-box attack, black-box optimization. It marks a setting where you can only submit inputs and observe outputs, with no access to internals, weights, or gradients. Its opposite is white-box, sometimes glass-box, where the implementation is visible — and the distinction determines which methods are even applicable.
