Architectures assembled out of BERT encoders rather than a single BERT applied directly — siamese or triplet configurations with shared weights, as in the Sentence-BERT title. The phrasing signals that the contribution lies in how pretrained encoders are arranged and fine-tuned, not in a new pretraining objective. That sets the right expectation: the baseline being beaten is a usage pattern, not another pretrained model.
