Deliberately giving the two halves of a paired design different sizes or roles. Masked autoencoders are the standard example: a heavy encoder that sees only visible patches, paired with a lightweight decoder used solely for the pretraining objective and discarded afterwards, which cuts training cost sharply. The word also describes settings where two parties have unequal information or capability, as in asymmetric knowledge distillation.
