A general word for how a problem is tackled — the framing and overall strategy, not just one model or algorithm. "A new approach to X" typically signals that the authors changed how the problem is posed, not only how it is solved. Because the word constrains nothing, it tells you little on its own; the actual contribution has to be read off the abstract.
