Definition

The act of producing an answer, seen almost always inside the compound "question answering." QA names a task format rather than a model type, and splits into extractive settings, where the answer is a span copied from a passage, and abstractive or open-ended ones, where the model writes it. Scoring differs sharply between the two, so the split matters when comparing numbers.
